On Saturday, Dec. 10, StepFest returned following a two-year absence since the pandemic. However, the incentives were worth the wait.

The showcase, held at Worthing Early College High School, had four Houston-based high school step teams who competed for the chance to win $2,000 for their team, a $100 payout to each stepper and an all-expenses paid trip to Atlanta for an HBCU college tour of Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morehouse College.

In true fashion, a winner had to be declared and this year, The Swagg Boiz took center stage while nabbing the prize.

The team consisted of middle-school aged students whose impressive performance earned them a standing ovation and major crowd support. To no surprise, group has had success as they’ve won numerous step shows on a national level.

DPhiD step team, who ranked second, consisted of high school students from Spring I.S.D. that are well-known for their creativity, unique steps, and precision. They took home $1,500 courtesy of Checker’s, Rodney Jones Law Group and Lemon-Lime Light Media.

Stepfest and its Origins

Founded by CEO of Lemon-Lime Light Media La’Torria Lemon, the annual show targets middle and high school step teams providing them a platform for their talents.

Stepfest also exposes youth to Greek Fraternity and Sorority, explains the history behind HBCU campuses, prize earning, and the benefits of community service participation.

Representatives from notable HBCUs such as, FAMU, Texas Southern University, Grambling State University, Clark Atlanta University, Wiley College, were just a few of the names offering information and assistance to prospective students.

Step Fest debuted in January 2019 with 11 local teams, seven judges and 900+ attendees. Since then, it has grown to become a safe haven event for informative decision making, family fun and an educational segway for young adolescents in the making.

Past prizes included $1,000 in prize money for teams and complimentary gifting courtesy of Smoothie King, 2 Loud Magazine and other community affiliates.
