Winston Contemporary Art is bringing Hip-Hop impresario, filmmaker and co-founder of the band, GRAY, Michael Holman, to Houston for two electrifying performances. November 2, 2018 the band GRAY explodes on stage at Houston’s MATCH theater followed on November 3rd by a storytelling performance, featuring Holman, that will leave you spellbound.
Holman co-founded GRAY with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1979. GRAY, an electronic art-noise band, features members Holman and & Nick Taylor. Together they create sound and music from unexpected places, in unexpected ways. GRAY uses synthesizers, film & video, electric hand tools, anything that can be harnessed to create beautiful sounds and music. The music is accompanied by visuals from Holman’s personal collection of art world videos, including footage of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
On November 3, 2018, Holman takes us on a journey through storytelling, using video and photographs that provide a glimpse of the hip-hop and Downtown New York Art scenes, during his performance, “Confessions of a Subculturalist,” as Holman recollects his role as a connector and impresario in the creation of hip-hop and Downtown New York Art culture.
“This is an opportunity to bring a one-of-a-kind, historic teaching/arts educational event to Houston. Those who love Hip-Hop and the Downtown Art Scene of New York’s 1980s, will dig the way this story is told through my own history and experiences of being there when these amazing genres of music, art and dance were being born.” -said Holman
