The Imani Dads’ Club was started by a group of fathers to showcase the positive representation of fathers in the African American community. As the discussion about the representation of African Americans as superheroes continues with the recent debut of Marvel’s “Black Panther”, the Imani School Dads’ Club attended the kids’ classes to showcase how to represent like a super hero. The fathers spent quality time reading to the Pre K- 2nd grade children and they all had a ball.
We spoke with the Vice President of the Imani Dads’ club, Teeba Rose. Rose spoke on the importance of showing kids representation, “It is important that black fathers give their time and ensure that our kids see black fathers as heroes too… after all Superman, Aqua Man, Spiderman and Iron Man are all white characters but it is rare that a black child sees their father as a superhero.”
Rose explained that it was a wonderful experience for both the kids and the men of the Dads’ club. “To see the children excited as we paraded around the campus in our costumes and to see the fellowship amongst black men gathering together for an occasion like this was such a great feeling and event to be a part of,” said Rose.
The Imani Dads’ club is committed to being great role models for their youth and want to continue to dispel the negative stereotypes of black men. For more information on the Imani Dads’ club or the Imani School, please visit, https://www.imanischool.org.
