On Sep. 4, 2025, three-time Grammy Award-winning artist DēP release his solo album, BIRTHRIGHT, a fusion of the genres of Soul, R&B, Rock, Afro-Soul, Reggae, and Gospel.
Album Description:
BIRTHRIGHT is DēP’s prophetic declaration — a bold fusion of Black diasporic sounds, lived truth, and ancestral legacy. Inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance and grounded in his own purposed vision, DēP collaborates with producers Ray Quasi Nelson, Bizkit & Buttah, Lejaun Samuels and more as he weaves fiery anthems (Imma Do Me, We Ain’t Gon Run), spiritual reclamations (Soldier’s Revival, Namesake), and intimate truths (DeP’s Mamma, As I Am) into a sonic tapestry of resilience and royalty. With guest artistry from TeaMarrr, David Michale Wyatt, Aja Marie , and more — ‘BIRTHRIGHT’ isn’t just an album, it’s a coronation.
One on One with DēP:
Q: How does this album differ from your previous work?
DēP: I stepped away from the spotlight of the “Solo Artist” many years ago. I would occasionally release music but haven’t really operated or performed as such. I opted to sing bgv for major artists, creative directed and artist developed, vocal arranged and did talent contracted primarily. Randomly, I felt the charge of this project a few months ago and the need of accepting the role and responsibility of it. Trauma and past experiences made me hesitant to want to return to a solo career. This is my first concept album ever. It is transparent and not creatively safe. It doesn’t play by the roles. I didn’t hold back on anything. This project is truly purposed for connectivity and to represent creativity without boxes, genre limitations or boxes in general. This is a full body of work. A love letter to the true range of creativity without holding back and worried about the “rules”.
Q: What does this album mean to you?
D: This album is a declaration of my purpose and a message to others; we have the right to live without boxes… The true gift of life. It is me saying ‘YES’ to me and to the role. t means the world because it is the type of uncompromised music I saw myself making as a child. I had forgot. Feels good to be back to what I wanna do. What I’m supposed to do.
Q: This is your first concept album. What is the concept you’re delivering?
D: I make movement music. We all have the right to experience the fullness of life without limitations. It is a call to action to accept your identity self-worth, value, and unity building. Sonically, I explored the full range of music that the Black diaspora creatives make and that I listen to. We are often told to pick a genre and that’s just far too small of a box to fit in.
Q: What do you want listeners to take away from this album?
D: I want them remember who they are lol I sound like Mufasa but for real. Remember their value, their joys, their rights to live out loud. Claim their birthright!
DēP will be hosting an album release party here in Houston on Oct. 9. Get your tickets here!
