The Ensemble Theatre Kicks Off Black History Month 2021

This play is a celebration of the contributions that Black people have made to American culture. It was written to educate, inspire and introduce audiences to significant points of history through drama and music. Filled with musical selections such as Wade in the Water, A Change is Gonna Come, Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around and an original song from the play’s title: I, Too, Am America composed by musical director Melanie Bivens with choreography by Aisha Ussery, this play will inform and stir the soul with its patriotic message. Featured cast members include Kendrick “ KB” Brown, Rachel Hemphill Dickson, Crystal Rae and Steve Scott Support from this online presentation comes from the City of Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs through the Houston Arts Alliance, Enbridge, United Airlines and Texas Commission on the Arts.
ABOUT THE ENSEMBLE THEATRE
The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and enlighten, entertain and enrich a diverse community. It is the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest. It also holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s largest African American theatres that owns and operates its facility with an in-house production team. The Ensemble Theatre produces a main stage season of six contemporary and classic works devoted to the portrayal of the African American experience by local and national playwrights and artists. The theatre’s Performing Arts Education program provides educational workshops, Artist-in-Residence experiences and live performances for students both off-site and at the Theatre. The Young Performers Program offers intensive year-round training for youth, encompassing instruction in all disciplines of the theatre arts.
