Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz District D Back to School Drive
August 14, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Houston, Texas, July 28, 2021: City of Houston Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz decides to move
ahead with annual Back to School distribution despite new covid-19 delta variant and changing CDC
guidelines. District D families like many others statewide have experienced joblessness due to the covid19 pandemic and extensive home repairs resulting from winter storm Uri in the past year.
The significance of providing needed resources to a District where nearly one-third of constituents have
a household income that is less than $25,000 is a top priority for Council Member Evans-Shabazz.
Through the partnership with local Sunnyside business Concrete Pros, District D has been able to fund
school supplies for more than 500 students for the upcoming 2021-2022 academic school year. The
District D school supply distribution is a long held and highly anticipated tradition within the District and
has allowed the most disadvantaged constituents access to resources necessary for learning.
“It is my goal that my office addresses the needs of the community and as a former educator I have a
special interest in seeing our future leaders compete on a leveled playing field. We must continue to ask
ourselves the question, if our youth don’t have the basic pen and paper needed for classroom
assignments, how do we expect them to be successful”, said Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz.
The Office of Council Member Carolyn Evans-Shabazz is very grateful to Mr. Nasser owner of Concrete
Pros for his support in answering the call of the community in which they are located. The donations
provided by the aforementioned business will allow District D youth to get the resources required for
learning.
The back to school event will be held at Sunnyside Park 3502 Bellfort Ave. Houston, Texas 77051,
starting at 10:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. or until supplies last.
Child must be present in vehicle in order to receive school supplies.
The distribution will adhere to social distancing guidelines previously suggested by the CDC and
participants have been asked that everyone remain in their vehicles.
