A Journey Through West Africa’s Cuisine: Join Chef Kavachi Ukegbo For the ‘Art Of FuFu’ 3-Day Interactive Experience
February 25, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - February 26, 2023 @ 9:00 pm
$75.00Nigerian chef, Kavachi Ukegbo is spreading the culture during Black History Month with her signature Art of FuFu dining experiences. The Art of Fufu is a signature outreach event that is designed to spread awareness of the rich heritage of West African cuisine. Each event will be curated by Kavachi and will be hosted in one of Houston’s artsy urban-influenced neighborhoods including Third Ward, Southwest, and the Heights.
The series of events will kick-off on Thursday, February 23, 2023, and will end on Saturday, February 25, 2023. “So many Black Americans are learning about their roots and figuring out their ancestry which has created this interest in African food and African culture, said Kavachi.” The cookbook is a fun way to introduce these traditional African recipes.” What started as a one-off event that was spearheaded by Kavachi’s parent company Grubido in 2017, has become a cultural delight that has spawned Art of Fufu food and beverage tastings, art shows, and cooking classes. In 2021, the chef published the “Art of FuFu” cookbook that can now be purchased at Central Market, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.
“There are so many 3rd and 4th generation Africans who were born in America, and they never learned how to cook African food. As our grandparents and parents get older, we are losing the connection to our homeland. That’s what inspired me to create the “Art of FuFu” cookbook,” she shared.
This month those wishing to learn more about their African roots can enjoy an “Art of FuFu” cookbook cooking class on Thursday, February 23. Guests will learn terminology, traditions, and cooking methods from the collected recipes.
On Friday, February 24, Kavachi will host a Paint and FuFu event, where patrons will get a chance to create kitchen artwork with a focus on fufu while enjoying tasty bite-size fufu samples, light refreshments, and Afrobeats tunes!
Saturday’s event will close out the weekend of experiences with a full 5-course dinner called Belle Full. This intimate evening of family-style dining will feature a curated menu highlighting a unique blend of flavorful Nigerian and Southwest Houston cuisines, including Egusi and FuFu as the main entree.
