Discover How Kwanzaa Tradition, Creativity, and Community Unite in Third Ward

HOUSTON — As Kwanzaa approaches, Third Ward Cultural District invites the community to events across the district that honor and celebrate African heritage and community strength.

This week-long celebration (Dec 26- Jan 1), born during the Civil Rights era in 1966 by author and activist Maulana Ron Karenga, is driven by its seven guiding principles including Umoji (unity), Kuumba (creativity), and Kujichagulia (self-determination), and more. 

Hear stories from local organizations like SHAPE Community CenterProject Row Houses, and the Emancipation Economic Development Council about their  upcoming events and how they bring Kwanzaa’s principles to life every day transforming Third Ward into a beacon of unity and hope.

Third Ward Kwanzaa Celebrations Include: 

Kwanzaa Umoja (Unity): A Night of Music, Stories, and Market Treasures
Join us for an evening of storytelling, live music, and a local marketplace that celebrates community and connection. Hosted by the Greater Houston Area Kwanzaa Planning Committee, this event reflects the mission of the Third Ward Multi-Service Center to uplift and empower.

Kwanzaa Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): Children’s Cultural Exploration
Empower the next generation with performances, hands-on crafts, and cultural lessons. This family-friendly event, hosted by the Emancipation Economic Development Council, Project Row Houses, and the Third Ward–Cuney Homes Choice Neighborhood Initiative, is dedicated to building pride and knowledge in our youth.

Kwanzaa Kuumba (Creativity): A Vibrant Cultural Showcase
Celebrate Kwanzaa’s creative spirit with a night of art, performances, and cultural expression. Hosted by SHAPE Community Center and Project Row Houses, this event honors Black heritage and the transformative power of creativity in the Third Ward.
