HOUSTON – Have you heard the GOOD news?

Houston’s own Beyoncé Knowles Carter, along with her BeyGOOD Foundation, has announced the Cécred x BeyGood Fund, which provides financial assistance to cosmetology students and professional hair stylists within the beauty industry.

That’s right! An annual $500,000 will be given in scholarships and salon business grants. Five locations have been chosen due to their large, diverse community of hairstylists. They are: Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New Jersey.

Houston’s Franklin Institute had the honor of being selected as the one and only area cosmetology school scholarship partner. Tina Knowles-Lawson, who was a Houston-area hairstylist and salon owner for several years, is a proud alumna of the institute, adding to the honor as it celebrates 100 years of training and serving the Houston community.

“They were having meetings. They went around the U.S. looking for five schools that they wanted to help out or to select for their scholarship process and I was talking to one of the team members of the BeyGOOD Foundation, and when he said that Tina went to Franklin and it was still open, they were blown away because they looked us up and realized that we were still here,” said Ron Jemison, Jr., the president and owner of the Franklin Institute. “You don’t find too many African American businesses that are still open after 100 years, especially in the same family.”

Jemison is excited about the impact these scholarships will have on the students.

“I think students need an extra little boost of help to get the funds needed or get the motivation needed as well to actually go and follow their dreams that they’re actually trying to pursue,” he added. “With BeyGOOD and Beyoncé and Cécred all chipping in to help fund at least five future stylists to go to school and to follow their dreams, I think its amazing.”

The application deadline is March 20, 2024, and $10,000 Financial Aid Student Scholarships will be granted.

 Applicants must:

  • Be either currently enrolled in Franklin Institute or in receipt of an acceptance letter
