Harris County recently announced a collaboration with two former members of Destiny’s Child to develop 31 housing units for individuals facing homelessness in Houston. As reported by the Houston Chronicle, the Knowles-Rowland House aims to offer permanent assistance to its future residents. County records indicate that the housing project will include transportation, mental health resources, and health services. Furthermore, the project will provide the support of case managers and peer specialists.
“We just did the homeless count again, so it’s initiatives like this one I certainly will be supportive of it no matter who’s behind it, but it’s especially interesting, I think, because there are these names of Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, who, of course, have been supportive of the community for a very long time,” said Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo in a press conference.
Per reports, the Bread of Life gymnasium will be the site of the project. Rudy Rasmus, the executive director at Bread of Life, mentioned that the Knowles-Rowland project commenced several years ago. Rasmus stated that the members of Destiny’s Child constructed a youth center using the proceeds from their popular song “No, No, No.”
The housing project mentioned in Architectural Digest will receive a financial contribution of $7.2 million from the American Rescue Plan. The remaining $1.2 million for the project will be provided by other entities. During two of the final stops on Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, a larger launch for the $8.4 million project will take place. Another announcement will be made when Beyoncé is in the city on September 23 and September 24, 2023.
