A Hug That heals. Dr. Marisa Williams turns pain into purpose, builds a healthcare legacy rooted in love.

Igniting Visions

By the time Marisa Williams reached the front door, she was emotionally exhausted. The relationship with her mother had been strained for years – layered with misunderstandings, unspoken hurt, and unresolved pain. She was trying to leave quietly, hoping to avoid yet another argument.

Then her mother called her name from the bathroom.

“I was at the door and she hollered for me,” Williams said. She paused, praying that the short distance down the hallway wouldn’t end the way so many visits had before – in raised voices, slammed doors,
and tears that felt more like defeat than healing. “I turned around and was presented with a pair
of scissors.”

Confused, Marisa stood still as her mother began to cry. What followed would change the trajectory of her life, and mark one of the earliest moments she began to realize she was called to more than teaching business in a classroom.

“She asked me to help her cut her hair,” Williams said. “That’s when she told me she had breast cancer. She didn’t want the radiation to rob her of her hair. She wanted to freely give it as a sacrament to God.”
As Marisa carefully cut each lock, something else began to fall away.

“From many, many years of a broken relationship, every lock of her hair that fell, so did unforgiveness. So did regret,” she said. “All the arguments we’d had in the past, we weren’t making each other cry anymore. We were crying together.”
That moment marked the beginning of Dr. Marisa Williams’ journey as a caregiver – and the foundation of what would become A Hug Away Healthcare, a nationally recognized, award-winning healthcare agency built on compassion, dignity, and faith.

Where healing starts

“That was the beginning of realizing that healing does not start in the doctor’s office,” Williams said. “Healing starts at home.”
That belief is the heartbeat of A Hug Away Healthcare, which Marisa co-founded with her sister, Tikisha, after
additional family experiences years later helped crystallize what she already felt in her
spirit, that caregiving wasn’t just needed, it was her assignment.

By 2008, that calling had evolved into action.

Drawing from her background in education, business administration, and her service
in the U.S. Marine Corps, Marisa envisioned a different kind of healthcare model –
one that treated the whole person, not just the diagnosis.

“I wanted to bring everything to the home where it mattered most,” she explained. “Home health, hospice care, sitter services, medical supplies—care wrapped in compassion.”

What began as a calling soon became a lifeline for families navigating terminal illness, grief, and uncertainty. But the journey wasn’t easy.

The early years were marked by financial strain, staffing shortages, and the emotional weight that comes with end-of-life care. Still, Marisa never wavered.

Her resilience deepened after another personal chapter—years of infertility, followed by the birth of triplets in 2012.

That miracle expanded her understanding of vulnerability and hope, and it inspired

A Hug Away’s growth into pediatric hospice care, offering comfort and guidance to
families facing the unimaginable.

A business built on heart

Seventeen years later, A Hug Away Healthcare has grown into a thriving agency offering hospice, home health, and companion services for children and adults, without losing its personal touch.

“We’ve had many offers to buy us,” Williams said. “But we wanted to keep
a more personal touch – to not be corporately owned.”
Instead of selling out, Marisa made a bold decision: Franchising.

“Growth is inevitable,” she said. “People need what we have. They need those hugs that start with a caring hand, a caring touch.”

Her approach is intentional, duplicating the model, not diluting it.

“We’d rather duplicate what we have than sell it to a big corporation,”
she said. “So yes, we’re going to grow, but with purpose.”

When asked what advice she gives to entrepreneurs tempted to chase money without meaning, her answer is direct.
“They’ll soon find themselves broke,” Williams said. “You have to find a deeper meaning. You have to love what you do…and love why you do it.”

Measuring success by lives touched

Under Marisa’s leadership, A Hug Away Healthcare has earned multiple Best in
Katy awards, maintained an A+ Better Business Bureau rating since 2009, and holds certifications as a Minority-Owned Business, Small Business Enterprise, and Disabled Marine Corps Veteran-owned business.

She has also been honored as one of the Top 50 Leaders at the Top 50 Event for the second year in a row, further cementing her influence not only in healthcare, but in entrepreneurship and community leadership.

In 2025, Williams was named a lifetime recipient of Who’s Who of America, and in March she will receive two honorary doctorates – a Doctorate of Women Entrepreneurship and a Doctorate of Humanities, along with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Kamala Harris.

Yet accolades aren’t how Marisa defines success.

“When I look back,” she said thoughtfully, “have we helped more people
than we failed?”

That question fuels her vision for the future, which includes expanding A Hug Away’s franchising footprint and launching a nonprofit arm to support families who cannot afford care.

A calling, not just a company
Now, Williams is sharing her journey in a new way — through her upcoming book,
Igniting Visions: From Ashes to CEO.

As part of the launch, Williams says proceeds from the sale of the first 100 books will be donated to organizations focused on entrepreneurship, continuing her mission of not only building success but also creating pathways for others to do the same.

Marisa Williams’ story has been featured in numerous media outlets, but titles and recognition only tell part of the story.

At its core, A Hug Away Healthcare is an extension of one defining truth Marisa learned years ago in her mother’s living room: Healing happens in moments of vulnerability. Healing happens at home. Healing begins with love.

“A Hug Away is not just a business,” she said. “It’s a calling.”
