HOUSTON — Officials from the Houston Independent School District said they are working to assess and repair damage from the storm Thursday evening.
Crews worked through the night and that work is continuing Friday, according to a news release from the district.
Here is an update on conditions across the district:
- Thirty-six HISD campuses are still without power. District officials say they do not have an estimate of when the power will be restored.
- Dozens of campuses sustained wind and tree damage. The clean-up process is underway.
- A handful of campuses sustained more extensive damage. Superintendent Mike Miles is visiting Robinson, Paige, Sinclair and Pugh Elementary schools Friday to evaluate the extent of the damage to those campuses and establish a plan for their school operations next week.
- HISD’s goal is to have every student safely back in the classroom on Monday.
- If necessary, students whose buildings have more extensive damage may attend school at an alternative location while the damage is being repaired. We will communicate with any impacted school communities directly over the weekend.
- The most pressing issue is the widespread power outages. We are working with CenterPoint and City and County officials to ensure we are able to safely serve our students on Monday.
- Two Westside High School students were reportedly injured when their bus was stuck in the storm on the Hardy Toll Road. Both students are home and recovering. At this time, the district is not aware of any other injuries involving HISD students or staff.
- HISD has postponed the Educators of the Year event scheduled for Friday evening. The district will share a new date for the event as soon as possible.
District officials will provide another update on conditions Friday afternoon.
