Businesses are increasingly exploring the integration of artificial intelligence tools into their operations. Job seekers, on the other hand, have discovered a method to leverage these new technologies during the application process.

A study conducted by ResumeBuilder.com revealed that candidates are relying on ChatGPT to assist them in their job search. Those who have utilized this AI program claim to have received more interview opportunities and have successfully negotiated for higher salaries compared to those who did not use it. The survey indicated that 18% of respondents have incorporated ChatGPT into their job search strategies.

Younger individuals were the most frequent users of the tool, as indicated by 24% of 18- to 24-year-olds, 21% of 25- to 34-year-olds, and 25% of 35- to 44-year-olds. However, the usage percentages significantly decreased among older age groups, with only 9% of 45- to 54-year-olds and 3% of job seekers above 54 utilizing the tool. Julia Toothacre, Resume Builder’s resume and career strategist, highlighted in an analysis accompanying the survey findings that the disparities in age groups utilizing ChatGPT were not unexpected.

“First, younger generations have historically been more likely to embrace new technologies,” Toothacre declared, per reports. “Second, there are a lot of people on social media right now sharing their ChatGPT hacks for job searching, so I think it’s something that younger generations are learning about more rapidly. They are likely frustrated with the hiring process and want to try anything they can to get ahead of the competition.”

The survey findings indicated a gender disparity in the responses, with men reporting a higher usage of ChatGPT in their job searches compared to women. Specifically, 25% of men stated they utilized ChatGPT, while only 10% of women reported the same.

“I was surprised at the gender results,” Toothcare added. “I’ve never known women to shy away from new technology. However, in career development, men seem to be more likely to embrace whatever needs to be done to get the job.”

Job seekers have reported utilizing ChatGPT for various purposes such as research (75%), crafting resumes (73%), interview preparation (69%), and composing cover letters (62%). Additionally, some individuals have employed the AI tool for writing emails (51%), completing assessments (51%), and even using it during actual interviews (37%).

Among those who successfully secured a new job, individuals who utilized ChatGPT were more inclined to mention their ability to negotiate a higher salary compared to those who did not use the tool — 85% versus 52%. Furthermore, job seekers who used ChatGPT were more likely to receive interview requests frequently — 71% versus 53%.

When it comes to using the tool during the hiring process and the company discovering its use, the outcomes varied. The survey revealed that 29% of respondents were not hired due to the employer finding out about their use of ChatGPT. Conversely, 55% of respondents received positive feedback from prospective employers regarding their use of the tool.

“Candidates should be careful with how they use ChatGPT during the hiring process,” said Martin Gasparian, attorney, and owner of California-based Maison Law. “There are positives, but employers may not always see these, and this could make it much more difficult for you to secure employment. ChatGPT’s style of writing is very consistent, and when multiple candidates use it, employers may notice. To them, it may seem insincere.”
