Starting off 2017 highlighting some of the best in Houston music was “The Next Level Houston” event, shining a spotlight on the musical talent within our city.
GRAMMY nominated singer and songwriter Tamar Davis had a vision of rejuvenating the music scene in Houston by creating monthly live musical experiences for music lovers. Teaming up with Greta Williams of The Williams Group and others, this event not only acts as entertainment for those who want to unwind and enjoy real music, but it is also a platform to showcase the many professionally known and local talent Houston has to offer.
Before the show, the audience experienced the red carpet meet and greet and enjoyed sounds by DJ Cruize Control, who provided the vibes and set a great atmosphere for a night of stellar music. By the time the guest host, R&B superstar Leela James hit the stage, the audience was anxious and primed for the many musical talents to come. During the open mic portion of the show, professionally known artist Shonnie Murrell rocked the stage with her awesome drum session, and Andrea Helms of BET’s Sunday Best performed covers in addition to a song from her album, Clap For Me. Gene Moore, Jr., whose smooth R&B style is never disappointing, made it straight to my Instagram (everyone should be so lucky…LOL), and he truly deserved it.
The most impressive aspect of the entire night was Tamar Davis’ performance. She is amazing, as we already know, but what really caught me was her heartfelt appreciation to family and loved ones for supporting her vision. Not only did Tamar Davis prove how much she loves music; she proved how much she loves her city by giving local artists like Christina Collins a platform to showcase their own gifts.
Tamar Davis will host “The Next Level Houston” monthly with the next event Thursday February 2nd with headliner Montina Cooper! If 2016 was the year we lost many musical legends, let 2017 be the year that some new names in Houston finally get the shine they deserve. Come out and support local talent and a revamped live music experience in Houston.
